TEHRAN - Iran and Qatar plan to ink new contracts in the near future to boost bilateral ties in the energy sector, an official with Iran’s Ministry of Energy said.

Connecting the electricity grids of Iran and Qatar is one of the main measures taken for the development of the electricity cooperation, Mojtaba Akbari, the director of Iran’s Ministry of Energy for International Affairs said.

Effective steps have been taken to connect the electricity grids of the two countries in the administration of President Ebrahim Raisi, Akbari emphasized.

He went on to say that the chief of Qatar Electricity and Water Company has asked the Iranian energy officials to define a new chapter of cooperation between the two countries in the fields of wastewater and solar energy systems.

Akbari said Iranian energy officials will visit the Qatari capital of Doha later this month to clinch new contracts between the two countries in the relevant field.

Competent Iranian companies will become active in this Arab country as consultants for the construction of solar farms, the official added.

The Qatari Electricity and Water Company has entered direct talks with the competent Iranian knowledge-based companies, he said.

Iran and Qatar signed a comprehensive cooperation document in December 2023, at the end of the two countries’ ninth Joint Economic Committee meeting in Tehran.

The document was signed by Iran’s Energy Minister Ali-Akbar Mehrabian and Qatar’s Minister of Commerce and Industry Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Qassim Al Abdullah Al Thani as the heads of the Joint Economic Committee.

In the mentioned document, cooperation in the fields of energy (water and wastewater, electricity, oil, gas, and environment), exchanging experiences and technical knowledge, holding events, including exhibitions, specialized training courses in the fields of water and water technologies, renewable energies have been emphasized.

Exchanging private sector delegations active in the fields of consulting, contracting, and industries, production of equipment related to the electricity industry, and the readiness of the environmental organizations of the two countries to expand relations have also been covered in the document.
